2020 New Frontier Sundance Film Festival
The 2020 Sundance Film Festival will take place January 23 to February 2, 2020.
New Frontier is our amazing collection of the most innovative storytelling in the world. We showcase work that lives at the crossroads of film, art, performance, and emerging technologies—including experimental films, media installations, multimedia performances, panel discussions, and XR experiences—both in theaters and open exhibition settings at the Festival.
A wide range of innovative works engaging with cinematic storytelling will be considered for New Frontier. We encourage the diverse creative community of storytellers and technologists to submit inventive works of fiction, documentary, and interactive projects for consideration. Artists may submit their work in one of two categories for Festival consideration: New Frontier Films or all other New Frontier Projects.
New Frontier Films
If your project is an experimental film that could play in a traditional theater, please do not use this application. Instead, see our film requirements and application.
New Frontier Projects
Other New Frontier Projects might include 360 video, cinematic performances, media installations, custom digital platforms, VR/AR/MR/XR work, or some combination of those elements. To submit a New Frontier Project, please continue with this application.
Application Fees and Deadlines
Early Application ($40): July 26
Official Application ($60): August 16
Late Application ($80): September 6
What You Will Need for Your Application
We request that you provide documentation about your project whether it is finished or is still a work in progress; specific instructions for different file types are contained in the application. All projects benefit from including details in a pitch deck or cover letter, and most projects will need to share a floor plan or installation diagram and a tech rider in order to be fully vetted for the Festival.
This application supports the submission of most project materials; however, we will consider alternative delivery methods on a case-by-case basis. Please note that in-person demos of projects are by invitation only. We encourage you to share any media you can to document your project within the application.
Projects may have previously premiered at other festivals, industry trade shows, and/or conventions and still retain their eligibility for open submission to the Sundance Film Festival. However, we do look highly upon premiere status when considering submissions.
Please see our FAQs for more information about the New Frontier application process.
