Film Music Program

Welcome to the application for the 2020 Film Music and Sound Design Lab.

Eligibility

The program is focused on supporting accomplished composers from a wide range of musical backgrounds. This may include composers with previous experience writing for film, as well as accomplished composers working outside of film whose work is suitable for film scoring.

Description

The Film Music and Sound Design Lab brings together emerging film composers, fiction and documentary filmmakers, and sound designers to explore the power of storytelling through score and sound. Composers accepted into the lab will have the ability to score original music for either a fiction or nonfiction film. This lab is in partnership with Skywalker Sound.

When is my application due?

Applications must be completed and uploaded by Monday, April 20, 2020 in order to be reviewed.

Fiction or documentary?

The Film Music and Sound Design Lab provides composers and filmmakers the opportunity to score selections for either a fiction or documentary feature-length film in post-production. As the line between these genres continues to blur, the Film Music Program offers artists firsthand experience in composing original music and sound design.

What will I need in order to apply?

  • Online application registration
  • No more than 15 minutes of audio samples:
    • You can submit up to seven separate audio tracks, but in aggregate, they must not exceed the 15-minute maximum.
    • We suggest you submit samples as separate audio files as opposed to one long audio consisting of several pieces of music.
    • Supported file type: MP3 only.
  • Biography
    • Upload a copy of your resume that includes a full list of credits (.doc or PDF only).
      • Include your musical training as well as your level of fluency with digital audio workstations.
  • Upload a brief statement of intent outlining why you are applying to the program and how it fits into your overall career goals.
  • Demographic form
  • Nonrefundable fee: $40

What happens after I apply?

Applicants will be notified of selections by early June 2020. Notifications will not be made on a rolling basis. Please do not contact the office to request status updates. Due to the high volume of applications, we do not provide feedback.
